During my studies at the University of Alberta Visual communication program we had the opportunity to brand the Sound studies institute in their new brand identity venture. The Sound Studies Institute (SSI) at the University of Alberta supports research and creative activities that centralize sound in any way. This is why it was important to me that the brand conveyed sound in a visual way, and ensure there was an educational aspect to the style.
Logo Design
Mini logo
I wanted to create a design that would be mainly be used in front of darker background since black and white photos will be used most of the time. I also had the logo vary in opacity to have more interest and contrast without another colour.
Full logo
While creating this logo, I wanted to feature multiple audio elements, such as music, sounds of nature and audio puzzles. To do so, I found that sound waves are the universal way to see sound.
To measure space around the logo, compare the dot of the “i”. The sides must be at least the same width as the dot of the “i” and the top and bottom need at least the same width as half the dot of the “i”.
Alternative colouring
Since having a dark background is not always possible, I decided to use an almost charcoal purple. This will allow high contrast and compared to lighter backgrounds.
Logo combination
The University logo is a key element of this brand and must be included when required. Below are two versions—optimized for light and dark backgrounds—to ensure seamless integration across various designs.
Patterns & Colours
I wanted to create a retro, almost wallpaper-like pattern to have branding elements based on jazz albums. I also found that combining these patterns with high contrasting colours makes the details feel more electronic. This represents how diverse how the Study of Sounds is varied and complex and, for the most part, timeless. Colours took and inspired by 1950’s Jazz record albums create a sense of nostalgia and nods to how timeless that era felt.
